A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a new TV show and an official prequel to the famous show Game of Thrones. This show adapts the story from the novella “Tales of Dunk and Egg” written by George R.R. Martin, author of the original A Song of Ice and Fire books on which Game of Thrones is based. The series takes place approximately 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones and approximately 72 years after House of the Dragon, showing a different period in the history of Westeros.

The main story follows the knight Ser Duncan the Tall, also known as the Dunk, and his young squire Egg. Dunk is a humble hedgeknight who seeks honor and respect through tournaments and challenges across the Seven Kingdoms. Egg is his young squire, who is actually hiding a secret of noble birth (he is Aegon V Targaryen), the future king. Along the way, the two face danger, intrigue, and numerous personal challenges as they build their friendship and reputation in a world filled with dangers and historical figures.

The series was created and produced by George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker, with Martin serving as executive producer, meaning he was directly involved in its development. They are also executive produced by Ryan Condal (co-creator of House of the Dragon), Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris, and Sarah Bradshaw. The first season consists of six episodes and is directed by Sarah Adina Smith and Owen Harris, who each directed three episodes.

The series is scheduled to premiere on January 18, 2026, on HBO and the HBO Max streaming service, and has been given its first official trailer screening at New York Comic Con 2025.

Starring Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg (young Aegon). Other notable cast members include Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen, and Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle.

Unlike Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, this series focuses more on character relationships, personal stories, and adventures, and less on massive battles and complex political intrigue, although those are still present. While there are fewer long epic scenes, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms promises to enrich the world of Westeros with new perspectives, historical context, and rich characters that are sure to appeal to fans of the original franchise.
